Target extends store hours for holiday shopping ahead of Christmas, reduces coronavirus senior hours

Target has extended its store hours in the days leading up to Christmas.

Most stores will open at 7 a.m. and close at midnight starting this week, officials confirmed to USA TODAY. Hours can vary by location and are listed on the store locator at Target.com/store-locator.

Other stores also recently extended hours, an annual holiday shopping tradition. However, amid the coronavirus pandemic, store hours are shorter than last year.

Most Walmart stores nationwide close at 11 p.m. local time after hours were extended ahead of the shopping season in November. Before COVID-19, many Walmart stores were open 24 hours.

Target senior hours continue

While hours have been extended, Target has reduced its special hours for senior shoppers age 65 and older, pregnant women and those defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as vulnerable or at-risk at most locations from two days a week to one.

Most stores now dedicate the first hour on Tuesdays for these shoppers who are considered at greater risk by the CDC. Stores have had two senior hours per week since March.

Some locations have additional shopping time set aside for vulnerable shoppers. Individual store hours are listed on the store locator.

If seniors and those vulnerable aren't waiting at Target ahead of when stores open for the special hour, it is possible the stores will open to all shoppers, the company said on its coronavirus page.

"If no vulnerable guests are waiting to shop when the store opens, and other guests are waiting to shop, store leaders may decide to open the store to all guests," Target says. "Store capacity limits and social distancing guidelines apply and we’ll continue to follow state, county and city mandates related to vulnerable hours."

Target's Christmas Eve hours

Most Target stores will close at 8 p.m. local time this Christmas Eve, the retailer said on its coronavirus page.

"Guests in need of last-minute gifts or other holiday items will have the option to place same-day pickup and delivery orders up to two hours before their local Target store closes on Christmas Eve," Target said in a statement to USA TODAY.

In 2019, Target stores closed at 10 p.m. Christmas Eve. As in past years, Target stores will be closed on Christmas.
