Shoppers may soon be able to pay by contactless for more expensive goods and services such as a tank of fuel or a restaurant meal as banks push to increase the limit from £45 to £100.

Finance industry leaders have asked the Treasury for the cap to be lifted in a symbolic move that could be seen as one of the first concrete examples of Britain parting company with Brussels on standards.

Raising the cap in the UK to £100 could also help to reduce the spread of Covid-19 by doing away with the need for shoppers to key in their PINs, cutting face-to-face contact time with till workers and shortening queues.
